UK AI engineer salaries are diverging fast — top quartile is up 22% YoY

The market is bifurcating: senior AI/ML engineers at frontier-lab-adjacent firms are pulling away from generalist software roles. The 'ML literacy floor' for general engineering hires is rising too.

For early-career engineers in the UK, the implication isn't that everyone should pivot to AI — it's that everyone now needs a defensible answer to 'how do you work with LLMs?' on the CV. The top quartile pulling away is a recruiting signal, not a generalist trajectory. For career movers, the cleaner play is adjacency: data platform, MLOps, evals, safety — roles where shipping LLM features in production is the day job, but the bar to entry isn't a research-track PhD. Hiring volume at scaleups in that adjacent band is up materially in 2026.
